Is it harder for adult chinchillas to bond with you than baby chins?
Hi! I was thinking of adopting a pair of adult chinchillas from a local breeder, but do you think they'd bond to a new owner as well as a baby chinchilla would or would it be harder to get them used to you?
Bonding to adults is no harder or easier than bonding to babies. People who think that ANY chin is super easy to bond to are mistaken. Some chins are easy, some take a lot of patience, time, and hard work. Sadly, many deserving adults don't get homes because people think this, and let's face it, cute fuzzy babies are more appealing. That's a shame because some wonderful adult chins are missing out on great forever homes.
Babies can actually be more of a pain in the butt than older chins. They are scared at being taken away from the only thing they know. They require special cages so they can't escape. You cannot feed them any treats until they are over 6 months of age (even in older chins, treats need to be monitored). They are a lot more delicate than adults are as far as being handled, etc.
If you are looking at a breeders home, I would suggest taking the time to visit a few times and getting to know his/her chins. See if any of the adults catch your eye and then spend some time visiting with them. Almost all chins will be standoffish at first to a stranger, but even if they are, you will still feel that connection that tells you "these are the ones I want." A good breeder will be patient with you and willing to work with you on this. They want their chins to go to a wonderful home as much as you want to give it to them.
