Massage Therapy Can Improve Range of Motion in Scarred Pediatric Burn Survivors in Venice and Sarasota FL
A study has found that massage therapy improves the range of motion of children who had suffered burns. This is a treatment worth exploring for children who have survived burns but carry burn scars that may be limiting their range of motion in Venice and Sarasota FL.
The study was done in 2007 by Annie Morien, Ph.D., PA-C, LMT!,;Diane Garrison, BA, LMT, NCTMB; and Nancy Keeney Smith, LMT, NCTMB from the Florida School of Massage.
The study involved six children aged ten to seventeen who were attending a camp for pediatric burn survivors. Their burns were two to 16 years old and had well healed skin grafts that had become scars on several body parts. For each participant, a third degree burn scar was chosen for massage while a similar third degree burn scar on another contra-lateral body part of the same child was chosen as the control site that would not be given massage.
The children were given 20-25 minute massage sessions on the massage site once daily for five days. This was done in a quiet area separate from other camp activities. Each participant was always massaged by the same therapist and another therapist always did the data collection measurements for the same child.
The massage therapists had been given advanced training in massage specifically intended for burn scars. They always began with a discussion on any physical or emotional concerns of the child. The treatment consisted of five minutes of effleurage, five minutes of petrissage and two to five minutes of friction, depending on the child’s pain tolerance and level of comfort, all done with pure cocoa butter. The final five minutes were devoted to another discussion of any concerns or needs of the child with regard to the massage.
The participants’ range of motion was measured in the massage site and the control site before the very first massage session and after the last massage session. Results showed that the children’s range of motion increased in the massage site while there was no change in the control site.
According to the researchers, the results of their study are consistent with the results of earlier studies which showed that massage improves range of motion in non-burn patients.
The study further contained reports of other previous researches done on the effect of massage on burns.
A study by Field et al in 1998 was a week long observation of the effect of 20 minutes of massage before the daily debridement of adult burn patients. Debridement is the process of clinically removing burned tissue. Results showed that patients who were given massage therapy had less pain, anger and depression as compared to those who did not receive massage therapy.
In 2001, a study by Hernandez-Reif et al observed the effect of 15 minutes of massage before daily dressing changes of pediatric patients who were hospitalized with recent burns. The children’s crying, facial grimacing, torso movement and leg movement was assessed before and during each dressing change. Patients who were given massage were observed to have an increase only in torso movements during dressing changes, while patients who had not received massage showed an increase in all assessed measures of discomfort.
Although the studies used a therapeutic massage technique specifically geared toward burn patients, the same patients may still enjoy other massage therapy modalities from a professional massage spa after recovery. Among these modalities are reflexology massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy and sports massage therapy. Their mothers, if pregnant, may want to avail of pregnancy massage therapy, too, from the same massage spa in Venice and Sarasota FL.
