A Career As An NLP Practitioner

by Mark Walters

Neuro-linguistic programming, NLP for short, came about in the 1970's as a different method by which to help people in need of psychological therapy. Today, it is still practiced and focuses on helping people maintain a high level of self-awareness and giving them effective communication skills. For those looking to become a professional NLP practitioner and coach, there are many different programs that offer certification in NLP, with differing ways of doing so.

NLP has no blanket governing body at the national or international level. There are certain guidelines in place that the founders conceived, but the institutes that certify someone in NLP often maintain their own unique curriculum. The subject matter will likely be similar regardless of the program chosen, but as more and more NLP methods have been created, additional branches have arisen leading to new teaching techniques. NLP training most often occurs during a workshop or seminar. These can vary greatly in length depending on what type of certification someone desires. Some European training programs can last from a few days all the way to around nine months.

For those seeking to become a master NLP practitioner, the program will likely require more extensive training. In order to attain this status, the trainee will be required to not only master the techniques of basic NLP therapy, but they will need to show that they have the ability to create new methods and ideas to use toward further NLP development. A master NLP practitioner must be able to help people while empowering them. The idea is to teach people new ways of coping and feeling good about themselves while having them believe they are responsible for curing themselves. This requires a great deal of charisma, something that is not necessarily teachable.

Becoming a life coach or a master NLP practitioner may not be everyone's goal. Some are interested in helping others with self-empowerment and then moving on to the next patient. Basic certification often requires a few days or a couple of weeks in a seminar or workshop setting. These sessions may last all day and provide optional evening sessions. No two programs will be exactly the same, but they will follow the founders' guidelines and use methods approved by the Society of NLP. Candidates who complete the training are certified NLP Practitioners.

Once NLP certification is complete, one may choose to further their training and become a master or life coach. New techniques are continually developed and NLP practitioners are responsible for this. There will continue to be new opportunities for NLP practitioners.
